As far back as the reign of Charlemagne the opportunity for toughout the been offered whenever the Vikingane the Ohristian Europe throughout the 9th and 10th centuries. And even before the Nordic lands were not completely isolated since commercial links with the countries of the South had existed as far back as the days of the Roman Empire and it was in fact via these commercial routes that the first Christian mis sionaries arrived in Scandinavia. St Willibrord the apostle of Friesland came to Denmark in about 725 and was permitted to return home accompanied by thirty young Danes whom he wished to bring up in the Christian faith. However no trace of this mission has been found. A hundred years later in 823 Ebbo Archbishop of Reims and papal legate was appointed to preach Christianity to the pagans of the North and arrived in Denmark accompanied by Willerich Bishop of Bremen. He was no more successful than his predecessor and so returned home again with a group of young Danes who were willing to be instructed in the new religion. (OS)
