About the book >.>.> I was nervous at first-isn’t everyone?-but after driving him round the block a couple of times doing a few turns and a reverse and answering the stock questions from the road code he gave me a column of ticks and I had my licence. At last. Now I was ready for business. With a brand-new licence and tweaked-up racer I was anxious to start dicing as soon as I could but there didn’t seem many events on the calendar suitable for a complete novice. Pop solved the problem by “finding” an ideal hill-climb venue. We had a summer house at Muriwai Beach some 25 miles from Auckland and Pop had been collecting road metal from the local quarry to lay a drive for the house. The quarry was at the bottom of a hill about five-eighths of a mile long and between truck loads of shingle it must have dawned on him that the road was tailor-made for competition. Being a local resident as well as Chairman of the Auckland Car Club he soon obtained permission for the ACC to use the hill and I looked forward to the first event and my motor-racing debut. I’d taken it for granted Pop would let me compete! Unfortunately the first hill-climb coincided with one of Pop’s rare visits to hospital but my entry was accepted and I was in the paddock polishing the little Ulster and making all those nervous last-minute modifications that seem so im- portant. Not being able to give me a last-minute lecture Pop settled for a few well-chosen words from his hospital bed the general message being that if I so much as scraped a guard the Ulster and I would part company for good.
