About the book >.>.> Philip Wilson Steer’s splendid oil painting “Poole Harbour” set the scene for many decades of artistic activity in and around Poole. By the 1920’s eminent painters such as Augustus John Henry Lamb and Bernard Gribble were living and working in the town. The presence of these artists gave great encouragement to the younger generation of local artists who with the annual exhibitions of the Poole & East Dorset Arts Society (whose Chairman was Sir Gerald Kelly the President of the Royal Academy) and the Bournemouth Arts Club made a virtual art colony in Poole. Other Dorset towns and villages also had their famous artists. Whistler painted at Lyme Regis; Roger Fry and Vanessa Bell at Studland; George Spencer Watson at Langton Matravers; Richard Eurich at Weymouth; Frances Hodgkins at Corfe Castle. Dorset still attracts prominent artists to live and work within its borders such as Elizabeth Frink at Blandford; Anthony Caro at Worth Matravers: Alastair Michie at Wareham: John Hubbard at Chideock; Sven Berlin at Wimborne: Abi Kremer at Bournemouth and Sam Rabin in Poole. Peter Davies tells us of the lives and careers and evaluates the work of these artists who found inspiration in Dorset from the shores of Poole Harbour to the quays of Weymouth and has illustrated his book with many examples of their work.
