About the book >.>.> When this study first appeared it was very much a pioneer effort with the inevitable errors and omissions of such a work. This revision embodies much new material the result of further survey excavation reidentification and reappraisal including the extensive investigations of John Barnatt on the north-eastern moorlands of the county. The original manuscript was the result of a long programme of fieldwork and research undertaken by the writer originally between 1962-76 with the intention of compiling as full a list as possible of Derbyshire barrows including sites mentioned in the antiquarian literature of the county. After a long period of gestation and lacking any Independent funding the work was issued privately in 1977 and such has been its success that this edition is the third and fullest. One must not forget that the founding father of Derbyshire barrow exploration was Thomas Bateman (1821-61) whose spirit infuses the study and who investigated some 200 burial-mounds in his native county alone. Those interested in the man and his life are recommended to read my short study The arrow Knight (1988). Other works dealing with Bateman and other Derbyshire antiquarians include my The Early Barrow Diggers (1974) and Pioneers of Prehistory (1984).
