About the book >.>.> In recent years continuing research efforts particularly oriented towards regional study have contributed significantly to the clarification of the Iron Age of southern England. Likewise archaeological reconnaissance excavation and radiocarbon dating have helped to elucidate the later prehistory of Britain north of the Tyne. As yet no systematic attempt has been made in print to examine the archaeology of this period in the intervening area or to evaluate as a whole the large body of evidence which has accumulated as a result of intensive local research in various parts of the region. The research of which these volumes are the published product was undertaken by A.J. Challis over a three-year period from 1969-72 under the supervision of the present writer and led to the successful submission of the work as a doctoral dissertation in the University of Durham in the autumn of 1972.
