About the book >.>.> In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Venetian commerce also benefitted from the arrival of a large number of foreign visitors many of whom were on the Grand Tour of Europe. The most numerous and wealthiest of the Grand Tourists were the British. The main destinations on the Tour were Rome Florence and Naples. But Venice was unique for its art and architecture as well as its great cultural attractions – the opera theatre performances the Carnival public spectacles and festivals – and its gambling and its courtesans. Its reputation was of a city of luxury pleasure libertinism and licence. John Ruskin was clear about the cause of the fall of Venice: the final degradation of the Venetian power appears owing not so much to the degradation of the principles of its government as to their being forgotten in the pursuit of pleasure. Eighteenth century art in Venice has been discussed by some scholars as if it was produced by a society aware that it was in decline. However the Venetians themselves were proud of their city which in many areas was Bourishing. The elegance and ebullience of the art of the period has been regarded as another facer of the city’s life of decadent pleasure. (OS)
