About the book >.>.> Over nearly two hundred and fifty years the British Museum has acquired by gift bequest or purchase ninety works of portrait sculpture in a variety of media including marble bronze stone plaster stoneware terracotta and unfired clay. Many of the works are by sculptors of the first rank and the sitters include eminent writers scholars and statesmen but they have been publicly displayed only rarely. Most of them are not widely known. An outstanding group of busts purchased from the studio of Louis- Fran?ois Roubiliac after his death by Dr Maty Principal Librarian of the Museum are discussed and fully illustrated here for the first time. The collection reflects the cultural political and intellectual history of Britain over nearly three centuries. Sculptors of the calibre of Michael Rysbrack Louis- Fran?ois Roubiliac Joseph Wilton Joseph Nollekens Sir Francis Chantrey Uli Nimptsch and Elisabeth Frink are represented and the sitters include the founder of the British Museum Sir Hans Sloane William Shakespeare John Milton Sir Isaac Newton Alexander Pope Lord Chesterfield King George IV as the Prince of Wales Sir Austen Henry Layard and George Bernard Shaw to name but a few.
