About the book >.>.> Mantegna was born near Padua in about 1431 and Bellini a few years later in Venice. When the former married Giovanni’s sister Nicolosia in 1453 they became brothers in-law at a time when family relationships were central to artists success. To be family meant strengthening the studio against rivals extending patronage networks and benefiting from the practices and secrets of the workshop. Mantegna remained in Padua and was later to pursue his career in Mantua as court painter to the ruling Gonzaga family whereas Bellini spent his entire career in Venice painting for churches private patrons and for the Venetian Republic. This exhibition is a special collaboration between our two institutions the National Gallery in London and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Paintings and drawings from both our institutions form the core of the exhibition and our curators Caroline Campbell Dagmar Korbacher and Neville Rowley have worked closely together to conceive and develop the project. A third partner in the venture is the British Museum which has supported the exhibition both with loans and the integration in the curatorial team of Sarah Vowles. Our debt of gratitude to the curators of the exhibition and to the Director of the British Museum. Hartwig Fischer is enormous. (MP)
