About the book >.>.> In 1774 following a stormy period in England she and eight disciples took ship for America landing in New York City. There her husband soon deserted her and after two years of urban hardship the little group moved upriver to Albany on the outskirts of which one of them had secured land in the Manor of Rensselaerwyck; the site is today the Albany County Airport. In this sequestered spot they lived quietly supporting themselves by jobs in the area and by farming. A few converts were made of the neighbors but the time was not yet ripe for the extension of the new gospel. That time came in 1781. Accompanied by a few of the faithful Mother Ann undertook a two-year missionary journey that covered Massachusetts upper Connecticut western Rhode Island and a few of the border townships of New York particularly New Lebanon. Converts came flocking by scores and unfortunately so did conflicts with the law. Worn out by her exertions Mother Ann returned to Niskeyuna (later Watervliet) in 1784 where she died that fall having first made provision for a successor Father James Whittaker a young English convert. In 1787 the first commune was organized “in Gospel Order” at New Lebanon followed later that year by the organizing of Mother Ann’s own little settlement. Within the next seven years the nine New England communes came into being then in the first two decades of the next century. (LL)
