About the book >.>.> The literature on the River Thames is indeed vast and this work is an attempt to bring within the confines of a modest volume some part of such material which may be useful to book collectors antiquarian and second-hand booksellers and hopefully form a basis for anyone undertaking research on some aspect of the River. There is a fairly steady stream of publications on the Thames and this first bibliographic attempt will require up-dating in future years. Although many aspects of the subject are recorded there are gaps e.g. Acts of Parliament Artists who have painted the scenes the records of the Thames Commissioners and those of the Conservancy but each one of these would require a large work in its own right. Initially having cruised the non-tidal river for many years and having collected many antiquarian works the intention was to limit one’s efforts to this part of the Thames but as the research proceeded I found that like the river itself I could not stop at Teddington and having as it were passed into the tide-way the subject veritably expanded. The problem then was what to leave out and how to keep the items strictly localised to the river by no means a simple matter when one looks at a 17th or 18th century map of London. Necessarily embankments had to be included. (MP)
