About the book >.>.> There is a tendency nowadays to think of 19th century painting in Hungary as comprising mainly works from the second half of the century: the names that come to mind are Mikl?s Barab?s J?zsef Borsos Bertalan Sz?kely K?roly Lotz Viktor Madar?sz and of course Mih?ly Munk?csy and P?l Szinyei Merse. Yet the first half of the century especially the Reform Age (1825-1848) was marked by historical and cultural development of great significance. It was during these years that the fine arts in Hungary assumed a national character and Hungarian artists were inspired by a feeling of national identity. In the words of the eminent art historian Elek Petrovics: “It is becoming increasingly obvious that in the history of Hungarian art the 19th century occupies a unique place having been so far the most important epoch of all. It was at this time that art became an organic part of the intellectual life of the nation… The task of the first fifty years was to awaken an interest in the arts… The task of the second half of the century was to free Hungarian art from its confines of provincialism and to raise the standard to that of European art in general.” In this book J?lia Szab? describes how this task was accomplished. She demonstrates how closely 19th century art was linked to 19th century history itself. She writes with a sensitive understanding about the artistic aims of the times and not only about famous artists but also about minor artists whose work is scarcely known and those who were better known abroad than at home.
