About the book >.>.> This is a masterly book by a master of his art. The author Michael Harvey-who worked with Reynolds Stone-is well-known as a distinguished designer and is widely experienced in the whole field of lettering-cut drawn or painted. Here he concentrates on ‘cutting rather than drawing’ and from the evidence of this book and its predecessors he is also a natural teacher direct helpful precise without being pedantic and (most important of all) convinced of the interest and excitement of his subject. He deals with tools materials and techniques. He sets out the logical structure of the design process and the analysis of the problem the conception and testing of ideas and finally implementation. He explains the problems of weight and size proportion and space of legibility and elegance. He reminds us that as in all the arts there are rules and disciplines to be learned and respected before they can be adjusted or creatively ignored. (You do not to quote Robert Frost-play tennis without a net). The whole process from design brief to satisfactory solution is very similar to the study of architecture and it is no surprise that the study of lettering was traditionally an important part of an architect’s education. So many of the qualities required of the designer are the same… attention to the brief respect for tools and materials (plus the imagination to exploit their uses) sensitivity in the delineation and relationship of outline and spaces skill and sensitivity in. final execution and the recognition that despite the demands of the necessary disciplines there are always as this book so splendidly illustrates opportunities for playfulness and individuality. I hope this book will be widely used and enjoyed. (LL)
