About the book >.>.> This catalogue includes all the reproductive prints published after paintings by Burne-Jones; these prints were published in limited editions and were intended to be framed and hung. The catalogue does not include prints which were published with- in books; the majority of these were photographic and of poor quality two excep- tions being The Begui.ing of Merlin (etching 10 x 5in. by Adolph Lalauze 1838- 1906) published in Artistes Anglais Contemporains by Ernest Chesnau Paris 1883 and Pers?e et les S?urs des Gorgons (etching 5% ? 6in. by F?lix Jasinski (1862-1901) (fig 3) published by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts within their edition for December 1893. Nor does the catalogue include the magnificent series of photogravures published in 1901 by The Berlin Photographic Society in elephant folio entitled The Work of E. Burne-Jones and limited to 800 copies each signed by Sir Philip Burne-Jones. These images were not published separately. The drawings for the Flower Book were reproduced lithographically in colour and published by the Fine Art Society in 1905. They were issued both bound and loose in portfolio; the issue was limited to 300 copies. Burne-Jones’s attitude to the signing and limitation of prints is discussed by Christopher Newall in his essay Burne-Jones and bis Printmakers. All the prints now catalogued were published in one of the various forms of limited editions the signatures being either those of the artist the of the engraver after the artist’s death in 1898. (LL)
