About the book >.>.> MINIATURE LINIATURES in illuminated manuscripts though their measurements are small are not thereby limited in their imaginative range their intellectual content or the skill and care of their execu- tion. It is therefore misleading to speak of them as belonging to the “minor arts” an old-fashioned somewhat disparaging classification that was popular at the end of the nineteenth century and is still occasionally used. The connotation of inferiority is not only inaccu- rate when applied to the smaller arts of the Middle Ages but also obscures the significance of smallness in the art and thought of that time. Mediaeval taste treasured such works as gold retables ivory crosses enameled reliquaries jeweled book covers and illuminated liturgical manuscripts upon which it expended its finest workman- ship and most precious materials and all were esteemed for their aesthetic qualities as well as for their hallowed roles in the rites of the church. And mediaeval thought preoccupied as it was with parallels analogies and symbols found the broadest meanings in small things as Adam of Saint Victor found Christ and the meaning of His passion in a walnut.
