About the book >.>.> Amazingly it is now over forty years since the 707 entered commercial service (following the KC-135) so it seems a sensible time to chronicle the story to date. I do not attempt to suggest this is the definitive history of the 1832 aircraft built after all there are still many still operating around the world (and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come!) but I hope it presents a contemporary view of this extremely important aircraft. It is over twenty five years since the previous Air-Britain monograph on the 707/720 produced by William M.Lloyd H.J.Nash Harry Sievers and John A. Whittle was published and I am indebted to them for starting my interest in the type (and other Boeing jet models) as well as providing a base for this book. The previous book concentrated on the civil 707 aircraft but this time round I have tried to balance both sides that evolved from the Dash-80 with details of the C/KC-135 as well as the 707. When the last monograph was published the type was still in production albeit at a slow rate and the 707 was a common sight at all the major airports around the world; nowadays a 707 sighting is becoming a rarity and the majority have been withdrawn from service and scrapped after long lives indeed 80000 hours in the air was not uncommon with 90000 achieved in some cases. The projected service life for the military variants remains open ended although the anticipated replacement date for the KC-135R must be sooner than the date of 2050 discussed several years ago if only due to the type’s increased utilisation. The E-3s and E-6s will continue to operate well into then next century but then their airframes are a lot newer than the late 50s/early 60s vintage KC-135s. (OS)
