About the book >.>.> Surrealist activity in Belgium has been discussed in numerous publications and exhi- bitions with varying degrees of success. Magritte even if the international recogni- tion of his work was belated long eclipsed other members of the group whose diverse roles and contributions are now better appreciated. However writers on this theme have programmatically taken their studies no further in time than the 1950s and anyone reading them might assume that Surrealist activity in all its diversity – some would say fragmentation – came to an end half-way through the century as though Magritte’s reputation implied a weakening of the movement or for some its disappearance. In 1961 Breton expressed his indignation in a letter to Magritte: ‘For my part I am no less outraged to see my activity and further still Surrealist activity considered only in relation to the inter-war period. You would think we had fallen silent or that nothing had happened since then.” Although more recently some writers have extended the field of research where France is concerned no such justice has yet been done for Surrealism in Belgium. Thus Andr? Souris the sole Belgian to be invited – he was then living in France to the conference on Surrealism in Cerisy in 1966 confined his paper entitled Paul Noug? et ses complices – the first attempt to define Surrealist activity in Belgium – to the year 1936 which was also though he did not mention this the date of his expulsion from the group. In response to a question from the audience. (OS)
