About the book >.>.> Among the most memorable of post-war British artists Carel Weight’s reputation has never been stronger. A senior Royal Academician his work is eagerly sought after throughout the world. He has been called appropriately the ‘Alfred Hitchcock of British painting’ the master of unnerv- ing atmospheres arising out of mundane situations. In his paintings everyday life is transmuted into something often startling and unsettling perceptively revealing the underlying emotions of commonplace events. Carel Weight’s impish sense of humour captured in this book through numerous encounters between artist and author is reflected in the lighter notes of his outstandingly original paintings. As Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art from 1957 to 1972 Carel Weight has influenced several generations of British painters; his pupils have in- cluded Hockney Bratby and Kitaj. He shares with Stanley Spencer – to whom he is often compared a love of the Pre- Raphaelites whose rich colours inform his work. His influences range from Bosch and Bruegel to Edvard Munch and the Surrealists. (MP)
