About the book >.>.> The R.N.A.S. also played a major role in the search for the German battlecruiser K?nigsberg and its subsequent detection and destruction in the Rufiji river delta in German East Africa in July 1915. Operations in this theatre were later based at Zanzibar and Mombasa a small detachment being sent to Mesopotamia in August 1915 to assist the Royal Flying Corps for a time. By the time the war had been under way for twelve months the R.N.A.S. had expanded considerably. To augment home production of aircraft a variety of machines had been purchased in France Canada and the United States for both operational and training purposes. A significant development was the introduction of Curtiss “America” flying boats to help combat the U- boat menace in the North Sea. Various Short seaplanes many built by sub-contractors continued to be the mainstay of coastal operations. Defence against the Zeppelin had a welcome success when on 28 November 1916 two B.E.2c’s from the Yarmouth group shot down L21 into the North Sea. In France fighter and reconnaissance operations were now undertaken by numbered squadrons administered by 1 and 4 Wings whilst 5 Wing was a bomber force based at Coudekerque. The original 3 Wing had merged into 2 Wing to continue Aegean operations and a new 3 Wing began to form at home later going over to France to carry out strategic bombing attacks from bases near Nancy. Bombing aircraft at this stage mainly comprised Sopwith 1? Strutters and Short Bombers the latter being a landplane derivative of the Short 184 Type seaplane. (MP)
