About the book >.>.> From 1880 river-mouth schemes had been opposed and doubts prevailed. By 1900 men of a new order had found their way into the board-room. The old problems still lay on the table. What would the new men do? The scene is set against the background of the times. Of fifty illustrations half are of the ancient Harbour eight miles from deep water and seemingly in full flower of prosperity. Many men on ships on quay ashore move within the narrative of happen- ings at the Port in these dynamic years. The first volume of ‘At the Port of Bristol’ was as it were a nineteenth- century plinth for the modern history of the Port. Upon that plinth this second volume is the first piece to stand. It is direct history and not a book for which other books have been ransacked. (MP)
