About the book >.>.> Right from the time it was founded part of the role of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague was to support contemporary art handicraft. To begin with this took the form of inspiration and encouragement provided by the high-quality objects that were collected and exhibited in the new institution for this purpose. In the course of time the historical development of the Museum saw it becoming involved in influencing contemporary creative production in a more active way by announcing and organising competitions on specific themes in the field of applied art often in liaison with the School of Applied Arts. This activity became particularly important in the years after the establishment of the new state of Czechoslovakia. At the same time the Museum attempted to make its exhibitions a place where Prague could encounter and be inspired by the production of countries with a well- developed tradition of design such as Sweden. Both these activities unquestionably contributed to creating the style of that time functionalism which many designers still use as their point of reference even today. At the same time the Museum built up its collections from the results of its competitions scholarships and exhibitions as a means of documenting contemporary fashion and style. (SP)
