About the book >.>.> Chapbooks broadsides photocopylore numismatic traditions and holy cards are examples of an extensive cheap print tradition frequently ignored by mainstream academia. “Dirtied” by their ephemeral nature their associations with mass-production and their everyday usedness such materials have often been mapped by hegemonic print culture as its low “other” disparaged and marginalized accordingly. Similarly until relatively recently scholars of oral culture have rhetorically attempted to distance the participants in and the materials of oral tradition from the “contaminating” effects of print- culture (cheap or otherwise) thereby reifying boundaries that have been in part artificially constructed between modes of transmission as well as local and larger-than-local ways of knowing. This is not to argue that differences among variously situated peoples and their forms of artistic communication do not exist but instead to suggest that as contemporary social historians anthropologists folklorists and cultural theorists have increasingly argued “all forms of cultural production need to be studied in relation to other cultural practices” just as each also needs to be situated in relation “to social and historical structures” (Grossberg et al. 1992:4). And it is with this need in mind that we have brought together the current collection of essays. (SP)
