About the book >.>.> This book grew out of two conferences held in Edinburgh the first under the auspices of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and both with the backing of the Extra-Mural Studies Department of Edinburgh University. The first conference in December 1976 was on the theme of Scottish Weapons and the second in the spring of 1978 on Weapons and Fortifications. Owing to the great interest in the work presented on both occasions it has been thought desirable to bring it together here along with other material suggested by discussion at the conferences and some work by other scholars in related fields. As our title suggests the book is primarily aimed at elucidating the history of weapons and fortifications in Scotland in the Medieval Period and afterwards; but the contents have not just narrowly been confined to matters purely relating to Scotland. Rather the intention has been to show how many of these things in Scotland relate to similar phenomena elsewhere. In some of the papers the relationship between fortifications and weapons is also explored. The book as a whole gives an indication of current thought and achievements in a vast field but cannot pretend to a complete coverage of all aspects of it. There is still much work needing to be done. (MP)
