About the book >.>.> World and Beyond. The title of the song we hear is Beyond by an unknown author sung by Kentrick Patrick. It was recorded in Jamai- ca in 1961-62 a time when with the help of Ska-music the birth of a cultural identity erupted in the former crown colony. Patrick sings passionately of a true love which not only conquers the highest mountains and deepest valleys but survives even death itself – to the end of the world and beyond! The figure in the video dances slowly and deliberately to the compelling rhythm of the music moving ever round and round on the spot. When the music stops the figure also pauses for a moment then the music begins anew and the figure once again takes up its introverted dance untiringly – like a hamster in a wheel. The force of the psychological tension of this situation although enhanced by the strange scenario – a cellar room dimly lit by the glow of a naked bulb apparently far removed from the outer world – stems from the specific form of repetition. The song returns and the figure dances resolvedly on. The idea of repetition is not nurtured by the monotony of playing the same video-clip over and over again but ensues from the unperturbed con- tinuance of the figure’s purpose. A particularly unyielding form of yearning (LL)
