About the book >.>.> I first came across Katja Strunz’s work at the exhibition Minimalism and After II in Spring 2003 at Haus Huth in Berlin On show was one of the folded sculptures that had recently brought her such acclaim alongside works by the abstract artist Hermann Gl?ckner (1889-1987). The diagonals in her work which extended into the surrounding space with their strongly angular and sharp-edged wooden elements made an incisive response to the verticals and horizontals in Gl?ckner’s compositions. The self-assurance with which the folded sculpture seized the space and asserted itself beside a classic abstract artist convinced me in an instant and inspired the wish to confer the Adolf Luther Foundation Art Prize on Katja Strunz and acquire one of her works for its collection. In the meantime Katja Strunz’s metal assemblage Gefaltetes Dreieck 2004 (folded triangle) has become integrated in the collection of the Adolf Luther Foundation which focuses chiefly on constructivist art object art as well as the mono- chrome in post-war modernism. The work has entered into a dialogue with the concepts of early modernism with the utopian notions of space in Malevich’s suprematist drawings from 1914 and in Lissitzky’s lithographic suite Victory over the Sun from 1921. Through its juxtaposition with the mono- chrome paintings by Yves Klein and Ad Reinhardt as well as with the metal objects of Lucio Fontana Adolf Luther Hermann Goepfert and Francois Morellet Strunz’s work is able to consolidate its contemporary position. This reflects equally to the principle of abstraction which Katja Strunz has revoked in favour of a narrative content and essential- ly it applies to an altered notion of time of the kind discussed by the aesthetic and philosophical discourses of postmodernism.
