About the book >.>.> Within the last year I had the occasion to re-read in a recently published deluxe edition Valerie Solanas’s 1968 SCUM Manifesto. I felt rather prurient reading it while cloistered in the lovely discreet quiet of the Mills College library where I was killing time before giving a lecture on feminist art to young art students and art historians. The text felt provocative still fresh and a little dirty like reading Bataille in the middle of a sunny afternoon. I felt transported by a combination of drowsiness and heat so distantly familiar from long afternoons spent in my own women’s college library and a feeling of the titillation of reading something forbidden. How is it possible that this text still feels so alive and so relevant? When Solanas unrolls as she does in pained and painful detail her version of phallocentrism’s villainy in world wars and politics it feels absolutely as if she is channeling the voices of my contemporaries who are outraged by our government and its flagrant rolling back of women’s and human rights of all kinds. In the passage titled “War.” she excoriates with incredible contemporaneity men’s propensity for war. (LL)
