About the book >.>.> The Roman poet Ovid’s Metamorphoses was an inexhaust- ible source of inspiration for the visual arts in Europe from the Renaissance to the Rococo. From a very early stage the practice arose to compose a series of pictures of scenes from the Metamorphoses into an artistic whole. This often took place in the form of the decoration of an interior. An early and significant example of this practice is Correggio’s four paintings depicting Jupiter’s love affairs. These were executed around 1530 for Federigo II Gonzaga in Mantua and were probably intended as a decoration for a room in the apartment in the Palazzo del T? occupied by Federi- go’s mistress Isabella Boschetti; Jupiter’s love affairs thus assumed topical significance by both referring to and inter- preting a contemporary love affair. This article draws attention to a similar relation between the decoration of La Chambre de la Princesse in the H?tel de Soubise in Paris and the event that led to the extension and decoration of both the prince’s and the princess’s apartments there in 1735 and the following years.
