About the book >.>.> Berthe Morisot is the least known and least appreciated of the great French Impressionists. Because a large propor- tion of her paintings remained in the possession of her family after her death they have rarely been exhibited or published. Now at last this book published in conjunc- tion with a major exhibition provides a timely re- evaluation of the artist’s achievement by bringing together her finest paintings and drawings. Charles Stuckey’s critical biography is certain to establish Morisot as one of the greatest of the Impressionist painters and also one of the most daring and influential. Early influenced by Corot Berthe Morisot became a close colleague as well as sister-in-law of Edouard Manet for whom she often modelled. She had close relationships with Edgar Degas Claude Monet and Renoir. New evidence suggests that Morisot’s vision and innovative ideas about composition palette and paint handling may have significantly influenced their work as much as the reverse. Her interest in capturing the sensations of vision her experimental use of unmixed white pigment and her visual shorthand of broken brushstrokes were among her outstanding contributions to the avant-garde of her day: Morisot was also the hostess of a leading salon and her life and career were connected with the great French flowering of arts and letters of the late nineteenth century. Such figures as St?phane Mallarm? Paul Verlaine Gioacchino Rossini the Goncourts and Emile Zola played a significant part in her life. (MP)
