He is remembered best for his masterpiece Liberty Leading the People (1830) but few of his works have received the kind of constant fascinated revisiting that has sealed the iconic status of Th?odore G?ricault’s The Raft of the Medusa (1819) for example. This book revisits individual paintings by Delacroix paying especially close attention to one of his most important works: a key but often overlooked painting from early Romanticism’s heyday Scenes from the Massacres at Chios (1824). The Origins of Romantic Painting captures a history of the competing sometimes baffled versions of Delacroix from his champion Charles Baudelaire to painters such as Henri Fantin-Latour and Paul Signac and on to the mid-twentieth-century assessments of Clement Greenberg. MacNamidhe also considers the novelist Stendhal’s crucial but long-neglected writings on painting and theatre. Stendhal’s captivating exasperated voice is heard at last – via descriptions of paintings not only by Delacroix but also by Delacroix’s now overlooked peers (whom Stendhal greatly preferred). Drawing together art criticism art theory philosophy and literary criticism and with examples from painting fiction and theatre The Origins of Romantic Painting rethinks Delacroix’s reputation as a Romantic along with his position in French painting as a whole demonstrating that he is a more complicated and rewarding artist than previously grasped. What emerges from this fascinating and intensive study is a wholly new way of understanding not only Delacroix’s place in art history but also Romanticism’s role in the tradition of French painting in the 1820s and beyond.
