About the book >.>.> Minimalism commonly refers to an artistic tendency that came to prominence in 1960s New York. It is characterised by the use of geometric principles and forms as well as industrial processes and materials to strip away personal expression and figurative reference. By paring artworks down to their most essential elements Minimalist artists intended to create a more direct encounter between the viewer and the art object. Their new approach to art opened up a wide range of possibilities captured under the banner of Post-Minimalism which extended the experience of art beyond the object itself into its environ- mental social and political contexts. This has left a legacy which still resonates today. Now inscribed in art history as a radical turning point in 20th-century art Minimalism is also hailed for its profound influence on music per- formance design fashion and lifestyle. However it is important to note that historically Minimalism was not easily defined or accepted even in its heyday. While art historians and critics used differing labels to de- scribe this new style-including “ABC art” “literal art” “reductive art” and “primary structures”-artists commonly associated with Minimal- ism never identified themselves as being part of a coherent movement. Recent scholarship and exhibitions have therefore begun to challenge the established narrative of Minimalism complicating and enriching our understanding of its origins and developments with the inclusion of artists and tendencies beyond the United States.
