About the book >.>.> We think it perfectly natural that people make up events and characters that they tell stories write novels paint pictures and make films. But the need to change the world around us in our own minds is astonishing. It starts very early on. What small boy doesn’t transform his mother’s laundry basket into an ocean-going liner and become its captain surveying the stormy seas? Fantasy and imagination are intrinsic to our development right from the start. And inventing stories is as old as humankind itself. Since time immemorial people have recounted stories and legends in words in pictures and – very much later in writing imagining the future and inventing new worlds. However ordinary this need may be there seems to be scant hope of ever discovering the roots of human fantasy or finding what drives it. Why do people resort to imagination? Why do they dream up parallel universes demonic hybrid creatures or extra-terrestrial life for that matter? It seems that people have always sought to tame their fears by inventing stories trying to make sense of the incomprehensible. So the earliest fictitious narratives tell of gods demons heroes nature and creation myths explaining the forces of nature and expressing the existential anxieties suffered by human beings. Evidently the act of creating pictures and stories helps people to find their way in the world. Perhaps precisely because of our boundless present in all its baffling complexity we use our imaginations to create uni- verses with their own terra firma where depending on the underlying artistic world view – different immutable laws apply. One thing is for sure: when we defy great danger in our imagination and survive fantastic adventures for one brief moment we escape our flat everyday lives creating a parallel world where we can succumb to our desires and passions and leave behind our actual mediocrity.
