About the book >.>.> Ever since photography was invented it has been fashionable to predict the end of painting as an art. In an age when the technical reproduction of works of art knows no bounds art – or at least painting of a commercial nature – has had to search for new challenges and niches. Not only the wild efforts of neo-expressionist talents budding geniuses and dilettantes but also diverse new con- tributions from very different continents bear witness to the fact that this particular art has never really become extinct. Painting is alive and well and even after several centuries of existence still offers young artists challenging and tantalising forms of expression. In his monumental canvasses Dan Hays seeks to confirm – maybe an impressive confirmation – the healthy state of art. And the Volkswagen art foundation welcomes this opportunity to promote contemporary art in Wolfsburg once again. Since it was established in February 2000 the art foun- dation in which Volkswagen concentrates its sponsoring activities in the fields of the fine arts and culture has sought to support talented young and as yet little-known artists. Sponsoring in the state of art is not patriarchal patronage even though provincialism often lays this charge at its door. It is in the interests of all concerned that art should not become the hench- man of politics or industry. Too close a proximity to a political purpose or an industrial advantage compromises art in a lasting way. Politics which has been known to harness art for its own purposes. can have no serious interest in the cultural identity different worlds to each other. af arts.
