About the book >.>.> Like all sensitive and curious beings Mircea Cantor seeks inspiration from reality in order to offer extremely selective and cleverly composed images. After a calm stroll in nature or a given habitat it is then a matter of him finding a key element and defining what must be done in order for him to present an image symbols an object in three dimensions and a range of expressive means. The imprint on a wall or some other surface the photograph that transforms and subverts reality the film that harks back to our origins through mythology or religion… these are all elements that stress the importance of his uncon- ventional and rhythmic mode of representation. In the face of the flood of images stemming from contemporary reality it is not a matter of “making one more image” as Mircea puts it – that is a circumstantial image. He further specifies his intentions: “How can we produce images after all the commercial brands have been making them often with talent – like Dior and Vuitton and the YouTube clips? The rhythm of my films plays a major role. My films and videos do not present a direct engagement but an aesthetic and philosophical involvement”. In 1998 through simple photographs then in 2002 with a video camera he observed the activity of a large market in Oradea in real time which often served as a makeshift abattoir. The sheep were killed and dissected in the street often on the ground. Mircea’s first shots are highly expressive and capture scenes in which the blood of the animals pours out everywhere in the furrows and onto the pavements; occupying the entire space. The testimony given by the artist through photographs taken in the moment constitutes a sensitive observation. (LL)
