About the book >.>.> Painting Not Painting brings together three artists whose work has an unnerving ambition that shakes our expectations of what painting or object-making should be about. In the juxtaposition of the ideas behind the works in this exhibition Jim Lambie Victoria Morton and Julie Roberts show how artists’ ideas can be fresh self-aware contradictory and open-ended. Each artist is knowledgeable of art history and deploys that knowledge effectively to disturb our expectations. Painting Not Painting includes the seventh installation of Jim Lambie’s signature multi- coloured work Zobop. Located in the curved upper terrace and both staircases the piece plays with our perception giving a ‘head rush’ at particular points of its installation where the kinks and quirks of the building’s architecture shapes the visual dynamic of his piece. His installation Prismatic Room (Instant Tan) presents an iconoclastic clash of elements that invite a variety of responses from pure retro ‘disco joy’ and a mad desire to dance to paranoid anxiety.
