About the book >.>.> A History of de Havilland The hundreth anniversary of the birth on July 27th 1882 of Sir Geoffrey de Havilland is celebrated by pilots technicians and many others who cherish memories of the formative years of aviation. Among the pioneers he had a special personal appeal and he was almost unique in remaining technical head of his enterprise throughout a lifelong career. The centenary is marked by publication of “D. H.” the history of the de Havilland endeavour from the early thoughts of flying machines up to the present times when airways have become the normal mode of world travel. This edition of “D. H.” embraces the original version which was published in 1960 on the fiftieth anniversary of de Havilland’s first successful flight September 10th 1910. In thirteen additional chapters it describes the events of the 1960s and 1970s the era of the consortia which demonstrated the will for industrial co- operation in Europe. In presenting facts objectively Martin Sharp lets the reader form his opinion of the men and their projects. The company’s first taste of prosperity came from judging the power cost and flying qualities for a light aeroplane that would be practical in world use. In war the touch of genius appeared in a bomber which relieved of guns flew too fast and too high to need them. Introducing the first production jet engine onto the test beds as early as 1941 led to the world’s first jet airliner which flew in 1949 on Sir Geoffrey’s 67th birthday. (SP)
