About the book >.>.> In June 1974 some hundreds of old comrades of the United States 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and of the British 6th Airborne Divi- sion went to Normandy to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of D-Day 1944. Together with the people of the Norman towns and villages where they had fought they went to Mass and visited the rows of headstones in their cemeteries; they paraded past their old generals and remembered how frightened and sometimes how brave they had been; they drank and sang in the caf?s at night and they remembered a unity of spirit and of action which they often seek but seldom find to-day. They had all been ‘Airborne’ and many wished they were still. The birth of this spirit; the raising and train- ing of those three divisions; their assault over the Atlantic Wall by night; their sucesses and failures their days of bitter fighting: their courage and sometimes their lack of it; the smoke dust and blood the confusion the sleeplessness and fatigue and sacrifice and waste and triumphs of battle – all are set down simply and clearly in this book. The author now a retired Lieutenant General was the brigade major of the glider brigade in the British 6th Airborne Division on D-Day and soon afterwards took over com- mand of the 9th Parachute Battalion.
