About the book >.>.> This manual is for people who are concerned or angered by the deterioration of our society and who because they have some sense that their efforts can have an effect for change are looking for tools to transform it. It is a working reference for those who are prepared to act to create a better life for themselves and others. People can and want to change their environment so that human needs can be more adequately met. This manual illustrates that the process can be learned and that people working together can assume leadership and make changes. While developing courses in nonviolent social change for schools and offering workshops for people already involved in social organizing we found ourselves repeatedly in a dilemma. We wanted participants to become responsible for their own learning/training but many of the skills and resources usable by others were in our collective experience and not in print. Thus it was necessary for students teachers and workshop participants to rely heavily on us for input. In order to make these training and organizing resources more available and at the same time to free ourselves to work on our own projects and growth we decided to write this manual. This manual’s gestation over more than five years has resulted in an inevitable problem. Since its basic text was gathered our work has moved into new areas. With these new experiences our thinking and our resourcesfulness have (thank goodness!) continued to expand. We would like to include these ideas and resources some of which seem even more exciting to us right now but to do so would postpone the publication by several months (or years). We make no apologies for their exclusion: a living revolution must bring continuous changes or it is not what it claims to be. The ideas and tools in this book are in our judgment of real use and we want to make them available to people now. (LL)
