About the book >.>.> Thompson did not see himself primarily as a scholarly or academic writer or for that matter only as a historian. In addition to his historical works he published a novel and a number of poems most of which have been collected in a posthumously published volume. He also wrote extensively on the writers of the early romantic period and his last completed work was a study of William Blake. The family into which E. P. Thompson was born in 1924 had until then lived and worked mainly outside Britain. His father Edward John Thompson was coming to the end of a career as a Methodist educational missionary work- ing mainly in India. He was a poet and scholar who had served during World War I as an army chaplain in Mesopotamia and had been awarded the Military Cross for bravery in the front line. While on leave in wartime Palestine he had met and married Theodosia Jessup daughter of an American missionary family who had grown up in Beirut although she had returned to the United States to study and for a short time to teach at Vassar College.
