About the book >.>.> This is the story of the German forces in the Italian theater of war. They sought to hold the war and the terror of aerial bombing away from their homeland with courage bravery and self-sacrifice. They fought suffered and died with completely insufficient forces against an enemy that was tenfold or more their number especially in terms of armor and air forces. An overview of the often overlapping and constantly changing frontlines and unit boundaries of the German forces employed in Italy is called for here in order to provide the reader with a general overview of the fighting on the Italian mainland. The hot spots in the fighting will be described in relation to the overall situation in order to show the resulting combat from the perspective of those divisions involved. Successes and failures assessments of the commanders and commanding generals involved especially the strategy of Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring are intended to allow for a better understanding of the decision making and course of this violent struggle which was completely eclipsed by the events in the Eastern theater of war. When Generalfeldmarschall Kesselring chose to defend as far south as pos- sible in the Italian theater his intention was primarily to hold the enemy air forces at bay as distant as possible from German soil and thereby to spare the population an escalation of the existing sky-borne terror. This was especially true in the case of Austria. (MP)
