About the book >.>.> Tell over a century before a reader like this could even be W imagined in America an obscure neurologist and psychiatrist was doing his best to understand how the mind works and with what clinical consequences. That physician Sigmund Freud dared learn from his patients and indeed from himself in a most unusual way-he attended carefully the dreams he heard described in his office and he paid a lot of attention to his own dreams to his mind’s action dur- ing the night to the events and incidents he woke up remembering the stories that had unfolded while he lay sleeping and that now upon oc- casion held fast to his memory as if he had actually been someplace met certain individuals and so doing experienced pleasure or appre- hension or outright fear. To be sure Freud was hardly the first of history’s writers to understand the importance of dreams the revelations they offer us when light sum- mons us from rest and an enlightenment of sorts thereupon persists so that what we have dreamed gives us later pause as we go about our day’s activities. Shakespeare of course realized how much our dreams tell and signal and before him the Greek playwright of an older civilization. But Freud was a physician rather than a playwright. (SP)
