About the book >.>.> Forty years later there is still controversy over operation Market Garden the thrust against the Germans in Holland which had it been completely successful might have brought the war to an end months earlier. Thwarted in his desire to con- centrate the Allied forces in one decisive sweep towards Berlin Montgomery was nevertheless supported by Eisenhower for one major operation designed to bring the British army to the very threshold of the Ruhr. A joint operation between airborne and ground forces it fell into two parts: Market the bid by airborne forces to capture the bridges over the Dutch rivers; and Garden – the follow-up attack by 30 Corps of Second Army across the bridges to push ahead to Germany. But although Garden was largely successful operation Market went disastrously wrong at Arnhem with the loss of many thousands of men. Why? Over the years blame has frequently been attributed to the lack of communica- tions. Unfairly so considers the author who was the adjutant of 1st Airborne Divisional Signals. In this reasoned and authoritative book he examines the airborne signals’ experiences since they were formed in 1942 discussing their achievements in North Africa Sicily and Italy as a prelude to an evaluation of their vital role at Arnhem. Inevitably he is drawn to assess the broader issues which led to success and failure in Market Garden. (LL)
