About the book >.>.> This is the first complete history of The Royal Australian Regiment the mainstay of the Australian Regular Army for over 40 years. With the formation of the Regular Army of which The Royal Australian Regiment was the main component for the first time Australia had a permanent professional army available in peace and war for any task the government might direct. The Regiment soon found itself on active service continuously from 1950 to 1972. Duty First begins with the formation in late 1945 of three battalions for service with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan. Active service began with a “baptism of fire’ the Korean War. fierce combat in This was followed by counter guerrilla service in Malaya during the Emergency and action in Borneo during Confrontation. For the first time the top secret ‘Claret’ operations into Indonesian territory are related in detail. Duty First also provides a fresh well researched account of the many roles of the Australian battalions in Vietnam. The story is then brought to the present explaining how the Regiment adapted for a peacetime role that presently requires a high degree of flexibility and readiness for any task such as that following the Fiji coup in May 1987.
