About the book >.>.> From a markings point of view this period sees the German bombers starting to be recorded with pink or white formation bars on the wings and rudders. One theory about the pink colour is that red was initially tried but proved to be difficult to see against a green camouflage. Whether the pink was a deliberate colour or simply a result of over-painting the red with white is debatable. Also noted on a few bombers is the presence of an ‘all black fin’. Close examination of some photos does indeed seem to show all-black fins with no swastikas visible although this could simply be a covering of oil certainly in the case of Do17s where the engines were directly ahead of the fins. The Messerschmitt Bf109s were now almost universally sporting yellow noses whereas the Messerschmitt Bf 10s were now being seen with white noses. This makes sense as they were now being asked to provide close escort to the bomber formations and a rapid and clear identification of friendly fighters was essential for the long-suffering bomber crews.
