About the book >.>.> This book is not a regimental history but an anthology of stories told by those who served in or knew well Mountain Artillery one of the most unusual and colourful military units ever formed in the long history of the British Empire. Although little known because their role was mainly on the old North West Frontier of India for a hundred years until 1947 the Moun- tain Gunners nevertheless had immortality bestowed on them by Rudyard Kipling who wrote of them in his famous ballad ‘Screw-Guns’: ‘They sends us along where the roads are but mostly we goes where they ain’t: We’d climb up the side of a sign-board an’ trust to the stick o’ the paint. Armed with their ‘screw-guns’ weapons noted for their remarkable accuracy and so named because they were assembled from parts carried on the backs of powerful mules the Mountain Gunners had extra- ordinary mobility; on the march they had the enviable reputation of being able to move over long distances at the speed of Light Infantry. They could also fight over terrain which usually only Infantry could reach and one of the stories in this book tells how a Section of a Mountain Battery got its guns into action at the incredible altitude of 17200 feet when on operations in Tibet.
