About the book >.>.> This is the story of a force unique in military history told by the man who founded trained and led it. The men of the Gliders Pilot Regiment not only had to be skilled pilots- men of the Glider Pilot Regiment also had to be tough skilled fighters able to operate at high speed often behind the enemy lines side by side with the units they transported. In all they landed some 2000 gliders -in Sicily Normandy and the South of France at Arnhem and on the Rhine. They carried guns jeeps tanks and infantry and suffered 1500 casualties in the process a high figure for such a comparatively small force. But this story did not end with World War II. The regiment flew liaison aircraft and helicopters in Korea and Malaya before it was absorbed into the Army Air Corps where its traditions continue to flourish. During the short span of its existence men of the regiment were awarded 135 decorations for valour. (SP)
