About the book >.>.> Originally published in the early 1900s this biography covers the latter years of Rhodes’ life. The author briefly sketches the early history of the Rhodes family and the school and college days of Cecil Rhodes. An account of his business life in Kimberley is followed by a detailed description of his political career. Here is much interesting information on the aims of the Afrikaner Bond and a fascinating insight into Rhodes’ own ambitions. The author was by no means an undiscriminating ad- mirer of everything Rhodes did and is severely critical of the Jameson Raid. He denies that Rhodes was ever hated by the Boers but con- cedes that he greatly under-estimated the power of Paul Kruger and his nation. (SP)
