About the book >.>.> In the autumn of 1943 after the Soviet advance in Ukraine Heeresgruppe Mitte remained in its positions in Belorussia. From autumn 1943 to the spring of 1944 numerous fierce battles were fought from Vitebsk to Gomel. But in June 1944 the Soviet command did what the Germans least expected. After carefully concealing a build-up of forces dozens of Soviet armies with more than 1.5 million men thousands of tanks artillery pieces and aircraft launched an unexpected and rapid offensive along the frontlines in Belorussia. Overwhelming artillery fire and Soviet domination of the air exacerbated the German situation. This led to the collapse of Heeresgruppe Mitte and the entire central sector of the Eastern Front. In June 1941 German soldiers tanks and aircraft swept through Soviet positions like a hurricane dealing one crushing blow after another. In June 1944 the tables had turned. (LL)
