They were part of a bequest or are exhibited within a public foun- dation like that of Baron Thyssen in Madrid the Frick Collection in New York or else those of Wal- lace or of Dulwich in London. Doctor Rau’s col- lection is the only one of such quality and prob- ably the last one not available to the public. So Doe- tor Rau gives us a very fine present indeed today by agreeing to show a representative part of his col- lection in public. The initiative is all the more sym- bolical since it coincides with the change of mil- lennium and allows us to view a remarkable syn- thesis of half a millennium of Western art Indeed one of the particularities which provides this collection with its exceptional character is pre cisely the fact it spans five centuries of European art in a didactic spirit equal to that of the great- est museums throughout the world. The works have therefore been classified according to the great schools of art from the Renaissance until the 1950s. Nothing is missing not one period not one school no geographical area from the best Europe had to offer within the last five centuries. (MP)
