About the book >.>.> Counsellors many of them person-centred have a long history of working in the UK National Health Service (NHS) primary care with early reports dating back to the 1970s (Harray 1975; Anderson and Hasler 1979). The services they provided tended to arise from local decision-making based on the popularity of counselling among the public and among GPs (Sibbald et al. 1993) leading to a scenario where by the end of the 20th century approximately 80% of English GP practices had on-site counselling services (Mellor-Clark 2000). Provision was however patchy with access to counselling depending upon where you lived and the attitude of your GP to psychological services (Kendrick et al. 1993). This was a ‘grassroots’ development resulting from a demand for user- friendly and non-stigmatising psychological services and creative thinking on behalf of GPs about how to respond to this demand within the constraints of NHS resources. At this time counselling in primary care seemed to be flourishing as a result of its popularity and the widespread availability of a qualified counselling workforce despite an absence of sustainable central funding from the NHS and clear policy on the general availability of such services. This state of affairs was set to change with the publication of The Depression Report (CEPMHPG 2006). The fact that funding and therefore treatment for mental health problems lagged so far behind bio-medical interventions and that the disease burden represented by mental health problems was as significant as for example coronary heart disease (Department of Health 1999).
