About the book >.>.> While the imagery that Palmer created was unique the motives that inspired him were not so individual. Palmer was far from being alone in his yearning for a former age. Indeed he was very much of his time. By the eighteen twenties the paradigm of the past was exerting a powerful influence throughout society. In the years following the end of the Napoleonic Wars there had been much change. Yet there had been an increasing unease about the consequences of what seemed to many to be unbridled materialism. While the 1820s had witnessed technological advance it had also seen great economic upheavals and ones that had hit the poor particularly badly. Post-war boom had rapidly been followed by post-war bust. Radical and popular agitation had grown. Most troubling-from the point of view of those like Palmer who had a traditional Tory inclination – were the signs that the Party itself was yielding to the pressures of modernity. This tendency was promoted in particular by Lord Liverpool’s government in the period 1822-7 leading to broadly reformist policies now referred to by the term ‘Liberal Toryism. (SP)
