About the book >.>.> This book has been compiled to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Sir Alfred Munnings’s birth in 1878. The works chosen by the author for reproduction show the progress of the painter’s career from his early poster work and first Royal Academy pictures to his commissioned paintings and his race-course and racing scenes for which he is perhaps best remembered. The pictures themselves of which ninety-eight are reproduced in colour demonstrate his inventiveness originality and remarkable ability to capture a fleeting moment. They show that as a painter of horses in particular he worthily carried on the tradition of Ben Marshall and George Stubbs. The author traces Munnings’s life and work showing him to be a self-made man a controversial figure and one of the great English characters of this century. The captions to each of the full-page repro- ductions include many of Munnings’s own anec- dotes comments and observations about the paintings and their subjects from his three-volume autobiography. Many of the paintings illustrated in this book can be seen at Munnings’s former home and studios Castle House Dedham which is open to the public. (OS)
